This sounds great. I often drink spinach and pineapple. It sounds similar but better.

Hi I am going to try this smoothie for my daughter who is only 15 but has had type I diabetes since she was 10. I am hoping to help her get well…..please let me know of other ways to improve. I have a Juiceman blender and I hope that it is good enough to make these smoothies. Let me know if you know of any other people with type I who have turned their health challenge around by improving their diet. Thank you, Karyn

Hi I am hoping this green smoothie will improve my daughters health. She has type I diabetes and she is only 15 yrs. old, she was diagnosed at age 10. I only have a juiceman blender and I am hoping this will be good enough to blend these drinks. Please let me know of others with type I diabetes that have improved their health or maybe even reversed the disease. Thank you, Karyn

  6. Linda Says:

SOUNDS YUMMY…. I’D ADD A COUPLE OF SCOOPS OF MY AMAZING GRASS GREEN SUPERFOOD ALSO:)

  7. Arlean Says:

I started making green smoothies, thank to Victoria Botenko. It took getting used to at first because I was used to the sweet fruit smoothies. But I either am making them better or have developed a taste for them.

I think this is a big step forward. Less sugar plus gets all those extra greens to hungry little cells :).

    This looks VERY interesting! Arlean

  8. Starrla Rose Says:

    Hey Jim,
Are you going to the Raw Spirit Festival in Az. ?

  9. Dolores Says:

Sounds good … the mint got my attention. Now remember kale is part of the cabbage family which inhibits iodine absorption - too much cabbage family can lead to hypo-thyroidism (sp?). I had hypo .. cut out cabbage stuff and added more iodine - bingo - cured via beautiful, raw living foods!!!

My greenies: I use w/my spinach or dandelion - a large collard leaf with stem and of course and my favorite a 1/2 lemon - rind and all.

Take care … more recipes appreciated.

  10. Kelly Swanson Says:

Thanks Dolores for the reminder on the cabbage items. I make green smoothies all the time with kale, and kept looking in the mirror thinking am I gaining weight? Does menopause come on this fast? I will definitely make a switch in my greens.! Green w/ banana/orange is my fav. It reminds me the orange julius’ we used to get as a kid in the mall.

  11. Tammatha Says:

Remember though the cruciferious veggies have the great indole 3 carbinol which balances our estrogens, keeps breast cancer at bay. Hormone imbalances cause hypo thyroid not kale/veggies.

  12. theres Says:

i make my smoothie mostly with spinach banana, orange and an apple. this is my favorite, though i’ll try the mint, because my garden is full of chocolate-, orange- and apple mint.

  13. laura Says:

I’ve just started drinking green smoothies and kale is by far my favorite green to put in. I’m disappointed. How often can one eat it without compromising iodine absorption? What are other cabbage items other than “cabbage” of course?

  14. Marian Says:

I live in Taiwan. The greens here are quite different. Does anyone know anything about the nutritional value of pea leaves, sweet potato leaves, chuan chi? I use banana and orange juice and then pack my vitamix with greens of all kinds. Studies in Italy said it is good to add marjoram, sage or thyme to enhance anti-oxident impact of greens.

    Karyn, Laura, and Dolores:

Karyn, you should read Victoria Boutenko’s book “Green for Life” (someone else referenced…$10 at Amazon) to understand her family’s history…very interesting. Her son, Sergei, was diagnosed with Type I diabetes and she was so upset at the thought of him having to take insulin/meds for the rest of his life that she decided to investigate other options. (Rest of the family had issues as well.) To make a long story short, she got rid of his diabetes and he never went on insulin. He is strong and healthy now, many years later. Their story is truly inspirational.

Laura, I’m with you on the kale. I have a big handful of kale (usually with a big handful of chard) in my green smoothies about 4 times a week. I’ve never heard the bit about iodine absorption and I’ve read a ton, attended raw foods nutrition classes and am transferring to Davis to finish my degree in Clinical Nutrition. As far as I know, kale is a wonder green and I’m shocked to hear this. Dolores, can you (or Jim) elaborate on this? I’ll do more research but if this is indeed true, how much is TOO much?

    Thanks for your time.

  16. Bob Says:

This is interesting and useful information. I have been making green smoothies for a year or two now and i have to credit Victoria B and as well i credit Frederick who interviewed Victoria on a teleconference he hosted. Both of them have described many good smoothie recipes in their published books. For Victoria it was the book “Green for Life” and for Frederick it was the book “The Green Revolution Recipe Guide”. Thanks to both of them.
    Bob

  17. Ulli- Says:

Enjoy the green smoothies they are terrific! Have tried various ideas, feels very good! Do them every AM like the one above, thanks, with various greens also red cabbage good treatment of varicose veins.
Now i need to balance my diet with all the other things I have to learn about like dehydrator other recipes besides smoothies.

Victoria also got me going on green smoothies did buy her book Green for Life and had Victoras Kul. little book Love Your Body with wheat grass information etc. But I realize now I have so much more to learn, are reading now your 2 books on Raw Food Home Study Program and Rebuild Your Health and Be Your Own Doctor by Dr. ANN.
I wonder how to grow all the different sprouts like rice and beans, clover, fenugreek etc to start to become organic and able to afford it. Where to buy nuts that are not rancid, not in the supermarket? I just finished nuts I had from January in the shells kept in the fridge. The little organic food we have up here in the stores is not very fresh looking and very expensive. It’s a challenge, would love to find some Wheatgrass juice and was told there is some in Atlanta, they freeze it, is that ok.?I am sure fresh is better! Growing some herbs on my small porch and will look for some wild herbs now since it is much cheaper and better. So much to learn to get going and learn how to prepare the other foods mentioned in the materials.
It’s a challenge I am glad I started it and have a way to go to become much healthier, thanks.

  18. Janet Says:

The cabbage family plants are cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi and brussels sprouts. All are cultivars of the plant, Brassica oleracea.

  19. Carol Says:

In recent months I have been eating lots and lots of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and kale. Just had my blood tests for my primary doctor and my thyroid test was nicely in the normal range and far better than it had been when I wasn’t eating so much of the cabbage family. So I think my iodine absorption must be okay. Of course I eat a whole lot of other vegetables and greens too.

  20. Dorian Austin Says:

Juicing on a normal day for me has been; fresh organic spinach, kale, whole beet, fresh ginger root, carrots and sprinkle of cayenne pepper. I will drink your drink this weekend and ad an avacado.

    Thanks for sharing

    Dorian

  21. Susan Says:

Thanks Jim for a wonderful way to start the day….. I had my doubts on how this would taste at first, but for sure this is a winner.

I’m not even going to try variations for awhile!

  22. Colleen Says:

This is in reply to Karyn regarding her daughter with Type I diabetes: Karyn Sergei Boutenko had Type I diabetes and regained his health from eating a raw diet…green smoothies included. His mother, Victoria was the guiding force behind the change in her families diet. I believe they have a website called, raw family or http://www.rawfamily.com.

  23. John Says:

I have looked over quite a few of the green smothie’s receipt’s. I do not notice that there is any mention of using fresh wheat grass in the juice.
    Thanks John

  24. mark Says:

you put a hybrized non seeded pineapple. low value.
full of cultivars.. kale.. nothing wild about that and its devained, where the stage 2 minerals are.. mint is ok but still a cultivar..
a banana.. probabaly the worst hybrized food making the worst body ecology in a smoothie you can get.,
what is so superfood about this. definaltly not symbitoic.

1 quarter to 1 half fresh pineapple
3 leaves of Kale - I use deep green “dino” kale, deveined
1 ripe banana (can use frozen)
4 fresh mint leaves, optional-to taste
1 quarter to 1 half inch of fresh ginger root (can use dry), to taste
    2 to 4 cups water

    hi
i usually use rejuvelac in my green drink as a base, then put in two handfuls of green sprouts, some spinach and some other green veggies and some avocado for thickness… it is super delicious and very very green and vital… as far as wheat grass juice i am still growing some wheat grass and will try to put 1 oz. as soon as i get to juice that as well…sometimes i use fresh watermelon juice (the rind and meat) with the rejuvelac for a base…
