Backslider's Corner
- by Jim Carey
Why Resolutions Fail, and What To Do About It
You resolve to make a change for the better in your life - limit smoking, drinking, cooked food, etc.. You tell your friends, you write down your resolution, you actually make the change. It works, and it feels good. You're happy and proud. Your friends are happy and proud. Your life is better -- and then you backslide.
Why? Are you a slob without willpower? No....
Backsliding is a universal experience. Every one of us resists significant change, whether for the better or the worse. Our body, brain and behaviour have a built-in tendency to stay the same, within rather narrow limits, and to snap back when changed.
Normally it's a very good thing they do. If your body temperature or blood sugar changed by 10 percent you'd be in big trouble. This condition of equilbrium and resistance to change is called homeostasis. It characterizes all self-regulating systems and applies to psychological states and behaviour as well as to physical functioning.
Homeostasis doesn't distinguish between change for the better or change for the worse. It resists all change. Still, change does occur. So... how do you deal with homeostasis? How do you make change for the better easier? How do you make it last?
1) Be aware of the way homeostasis works.
2) Be willing to negotiate with your resistance to change.
3) Develop a support system.
4) Follow a regular practice.
5) Dedicate yourself to lifelong learning.
Whatever your age, your upbringing, or your education, what you are made of is mostly unused potential. It is your destiny to use what is unused, to learn and keep on learning for as long as you live. To choose this destiny isn't always easy, but it's the ultimate human adventure. Destinations appear in the distance, will be achieved and left behind. Still the path will continue; it will never end.
How to begin the journey? You need but only take the first step. When? There's always.... now.
-- these concepts came from "Mastery: The Keys to Long-Term Success and Fulfillment," by George Leonard (Dutton Press, 1991).
Raw Foods are a lifestyle choice, not a religion.

A 70 year old guest that went to CHI in mid-April with a throat & suspected pancreatic cancer diagnosis called this week to say that she just had a CAT scan. The results show that she no longer has any cancer! Furthermore, she no longer needs to take medication for high blood pressure or diabetes. She applied at home what she learned at CHI and this was her result.

Making a Personal Commitment to be Healthier
How do you stand? 95% raw? 80%? 70%? 25% raw, and falling? Remember, this is a Lifestyle Choice, not a religion. Eating outside of the program is not cheating or failing. It's just eating outside of the program. Don't give up because you can't be pure. Very few raw fooders are truly 100% raw. Even when we're only 50% raw we do incredibly better than when we're on the SAD (Standard American Diet).
If you'd like to be re-inspired in your rawness, to have a refresher course in food preparation, to re-experience the warm, loving, family atmosphere of CHI .. why, then . well . If you're Backsliding, why not Slide Back In to the program for a week or two? Now is a great time to visit CHI because the classes are full and there's a great energy with so many guests.
Check out http://CreativeHealthInstitute.us/programs.htm for class schedules. The next session begins June 12th.
Week two of every session is Raw Gourmet Week. A great opportunity to sharpen your raw food prep skills. If it isn't tasty, you won't eat it. And you can come for just the second week of a program!

Home Study
The Living Foods Lifestyle developed by Dr. Ann Wigmore, and refined over the last 28 years at Creative Health Institute (one of several Institutes founded or cofounded by Dr. Ann Wigmore), is also available in a home study version. If you can't get away for a two-week program, the home study alternative is available at http://ChiDiet.com/lessons.htm. There's so much information in the home study program - 15 lessons, 30 videos - that you'd have to spend a month at Creative Health Institute to cover it all.
Examine all, or any part of the program, and keep the book, Why Suffer?: How I Overcame Illness & Pain Naturally, by Dr. Ann Wigmore. Visit http://www.ChiDiet.com to learn more, or email james@ChiDiet.com with your questions.
We also have a new books page at http://chidiet.com/books.htm. More titles are being added every week; check out "Dr. Ann Wigmore's Kitchen:" http://chidiet.com/tapes.htm#v51.

Jim,
Re: 7 Most Common Diseases Raw Foodist Make DVD
Thank you for getting this information out! I'm watching Victoria for the 3rd time....so much fabulous cutting edge information. And, you're right on, the greens are in the limelight just like Ann Wigmore professed!! It just makes sense!! Chlorophyll...of course!!
Thank you for putting up the 7 Most Common Diseases Raw Foodist Make on your newsletter!! That sold me and the information is invaluable. Now, I don't have to make the same mistakes over and over again, get cravings or continually want 'more.'
Thanks, Jim...and by the way, I saw you too...You did a really good introducing the director. And, I enjoyed hearing a brief version of your story.
Oh, and the cut outs made me curious. I suspect Victoria was 'bashing' some product and didn't want it on the tape...that was rather humorous. I'll ask her when I see her at RAWSTOCK in August. :-)
Joy,
Karen Ferguson

We Got Mail
Dear Jim Carey,
I just wanted to dash off a quick note to let you know how wonderful I think your efforts are.
I spent a month at the Boston Hippocrates Health Institute back in 1977. I think the tone and spirit of what you are about are much truer to who Dr. Ann was than the efforts of others who happened to come into possession of other fruits of her work.
Keep up the excellent work. I look forward to each newsletter.
Best Regards,
Tim Campbell

Fruit Purees and Smoothies
Purees: Any fruit can be blended and eaten. A ripe banana can be added for more sweetness. Apples also give body to purees.
Fruit Smoothies can include any of these items:
For Body:
- apple and or banana or watermelon
To Add Living Vitamins and Enzymes:
- sprouted grains such as wheat and rye
Liquid:
- pure water or fruit juice
- Rejuvelac (Note: Rejuvelac acts as a preservative and adds more nutrition.)
For Calories and a Smooth Texture:
- Avocado (Always blend as the last item. Do not over-blend.)
To Add Protein, Minerals, or for a Different Texture:
- sunflower seed sprouts (high in complete protein)
- pumpkin seed sprouts (high in zinc)
- soaked almonds (rich in calcium)
- ground hulled white sesame (especially rich in calcium and magnesium)
Seasonings (Note: These are optional and most people
should avoid these while detoxifying):
- cinnamon
- cloves
- allspice
- pumpkin spice
- ginger
Note: Purees and Smoothies made with Rejuvelac can be blended in the morning and small amounts eaten throughout the day. This can be a nutritional breakthrough for busy people because they do not have to stop at each "meal" and decide what to eat that is good for them. All they have to do is keep this blended food in the fridge. Leftover smoothies can be dehydrated and made into fruit roll-ups.
