December 8, 2007 Thanksgiving with the Andressohns It's been a long time since we talked about the Andressohns, the Florida family who had their children taken from them because they were Raw Living Vegans. Here's an update by Dr. Flora.
The children are so healthy and the home they are renting is up for sale. Their yard is looking like a jungle with papayas hanging heavy on their trees, and so many fruits and vegetables, coconuts and other goodies peeking out from behind leaves. I took them a monstera deliciosa plant and ripe fruit. I also took many boxes of donated Paradise Farms baby greens and a case of their organic avocados. They are still up against the wall financially, so I hope that some viewers will share their abundance with them. I took the children some clothes and toys, too. I love that family and what they are doing for their children. I then went to Paradise Farms Organic Farms and spent some time with Gabrielle and on to the Everglades International Hostel in Florida City where to my delight, there were many vegan dishes at their feast, as Owhnn has returned from Puerto Rico with ideas she has turned into reality: a raw food kitchen for the hostelers. So, if any people are coming to visit South Miami area or the Keys, $25 will get them a student dorm room and the best raw vegan food available. Dr. Flora van Orden III [For the complete Andressohn family story, visit http://rawlivingfoods.typepad.com/1/andressohn_family_updates/index.html. False Alarm - The USDA document that I wrote you about last Sunday, AMS-FV-07-0090, does NOT deal with pasteurizing or fumigating all greens. Pasteurization of greens is not the proposal. It's about additional regulation of Organic farms. First of all, Organic farms ARE regulated. Nobody can just call their foods organic -- it has to undergo certification. Requiring testing of pathogens with every harvest is ridiculous. For a huge corporation, this testing would cost nothing to them, but to the small-scale farmer who's growing many different types of crops on the same field, this would be a major burden in terms of time and money. This move essentially crushes all small farms and would allow industrialized food to completely dominate the market. For the confusion of the two, my apologies. That's what happens when you rush to press with a short deadline. I'm doing a weekly interview on Saturday mornings with Dr. Steve Monkiewicz from Bakersfield, California. He has a number of interesting guests each week, and I'm one of his "regulars." Broadcasts are also available as podcasts at http://web.mac.com/drsteve720. Each show is 30 minutes.
by Jim Carey During my radio interview with Kerry Pharr last November he mentioned going Raw for three days, and then gave up because he was always hungry. I have a solution for that: A) To make a raw dish that is delicious and satisfying it is necessary to have all five of these flavors in your recipe:
The ratios will change with the type of dish you are creating. The key to creating great Raw Recipes is learning to balance the five flavors. With time and practice creating Raw Gourmet food will be second nature to you. Here is a great resource for raw recipes: chiDiet.net.
A breakdown of the five tastes:
C) Eating on a schedule. Get you body used to eating on time. I eat at 7:30 am, 12:30 pm and 5:30 pm. Within a few days your body will begine producing digestive juices on schedule, digesting your foods more completely, and leaving you alone between meals. D) Listen to your body, and eat only what it needs. If you're coming off the SAD, this might mean training your body as to what it needs vs. what it wants. - with thanks to Victoria Boutenko for the "5 Tastes" insights. To fully attain the benefits of the Raw Living Foods Lifestyle means more than eating raw fruits and veggies. You need to be aware of your protein and sugar intakes and your combination of foods, for example. Our lifestyle also includes detoxing, internal and colon cleansing, the proper type and amount of exercise, supplements of wheatgrass juice, fresh sprouts and easy ways to grow your own, energy soup and green smoothies, dehydrated foods, and how to deal with your cooked food addictions. Even when you attend one of Dr. Ann Wigmore's hands-on educational centers, it's hard to retain all of the information. It's also challenging to stay Raw in a cooked food world. For these reasons we created the Dr. Ann Wigmore Raw Living Foods Lifestyle Home Study Program.
Compiled from over 30 years of teaching the Wigmore Lifestyle at Creative Health Institute in Michigan, the 15 Lessons of the Home Study Program are available as a set, or you can get one lesson at a time on the subscription plan. Visit chiDiet.com for more information (we're having a Holiday Sale this month). If you're looking for motivation, inspiration or information to Go and Stay Raw, this is your resource! Here's what others have to say about the Home Study Program: http://rawlivingfoods.typepad.com/1/feedback_home_study_program/index.html.
"If you ignore your health, it will go away." Jim Carey As a bachelor, I'm into quick-and-easy food prep. Some accuse me of being raw because I don't have to cook. That's not true - microwave dinners are even easier than raw. But as regular readers know, I don't have a microwave any more. I admit that it's rare that I create a Gourmet Raw Vegan recipe. Instead, I rely on regular visits to raw friends, and institutes like Creative Health for the yummy stuff.
I use small quantities of seed in quart jars. Quick and easy. I usually have 6-10 jars of sprouts growing in the drainer, in different stages of development. One of the coolest parts is harvesting half a jar of sprouts, then finding the jar full again tomorrow! Like I said, it's quick, easy and cheap. Non-organic sprouts cost $4-6 for a small tray at the supermarket. My fresh organic sprouts cost about a dime for the same quantity. I buy most of my organic seeds from wheatgrasskits.com and BulkNuts4You.com. My friend Kerry Pharr, of Supertalk 97.7 radio in western Tennessee, is looking for first-person accounts of healing with Raw Living Foods for his broadcast. Kerry's show is called Fight the Good Fight, aired at 11:30 am on Saturdays. If you're willing to share your story on-the-air, by phone (he'll tape you at your convenience), you can contact Kerry through his website at http://www.fightthegoodfight.info. Kerry's also podcasting his broadcasts at http://www.live365.com/stations/goodfightradio_oda?site=goodfightradio_oda. Shows are 30 minutes. If you'd like to hear my November 24th interview see Health/Healing Dr. Jim Carey. Jim, Just thought I would drop a line to you saying thanks so much for the information in the complete package I bought. A group from my church watch a DVD each Friday evening. I prepare a raw food dinner and we have lost over 150lbs in our small group. I no longer have to take over three hundred dollars of medicines a month. We watched Matt Monarch come speak. Paul Nison came once, then I was able to have him come to our church and speak and really encouraged many people. Now on December 15th we are having a Healthy For the Holidays fair at my church. We have free chair massages, teaching on essential oils, teaching on Raw Foods and I will be putting on a Food Prep Class three times during the day and we have classes on water. Just saying thanks, as I work to finish my Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling I wish I could do an internship at the Union City location but I am having trouble getting time. Paul Nison suggested I come to Palm Beach to work but I wish I could do the energy exchange program. But like I said it is just a dream at this point; maybe
over the summer between classes. Veggie art now has it's own category on our weblog at chiDiet.net. There will be a new posting every other day for the next month or so...
